This is an edit I made of recordings taken while walking the West Highland Way in May 2021. I was walking the route as part of my PhD research looking at the information behaviour of hikers on the West Highland Way, exploring the concept of embodied information and wellbeing benefits present in the activity. These recordings were a form of documenting my journey beyond photos and journaling, I can still clearly picture where I was when I made them and this brings back warm memories of my experience (well, sometimes slightly wet and windy memories…), like an aural postcard.
They are a mixture of recordings made by the side of the path, where I was trying to capture the sounds in that point and place in time, and recordings made while I was walking stretches of the path, to capture the surrounding environment combined with the ever-changing going underfoot. They were made in the following places: next to the Craigallan Fire Memorial; next to the Burn of Mar at the foot of Conic Hill; walking through the edge of Rowardennan Forest; in some woodland at Drochaid Doire Mhic Làimh and walking down through Glen Nevis. Maybe if you’ve walked the route this will bring back memories of your own experience or, if you haven’t, it’ll give you a sense of walking the West Highland Way by proxy.
Recordings were made on a Tascam DR-100 mk iii mounted on a pistol grip kindly lent to me by good friend Gavin Fort. I would like to gratefully acknowledge the input and guidance of my PhD supervisors Dr Perla Innocenti and Dr Mark Dunlop of the Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Strathclyde in facilitating this research project. A gracious nod to Arthur Russell for inspiring the title.
